Ukraine may have to cede territory to Russia in order to reach a “temporary peace” with Moscow, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko argued in a BBC interview broadcast Friday.

Vitali Klitschko
Later Friday, the mayor of Kyiv posted a message on Telegram to “clarify matters” following the interview, which sparked protests on Ukrainian social media.
Mr. Klitschko justified himself by saying that “many politicians and international media” are talking about a territorial exchange as one of the conditions for a US-backed ceasefire to end Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which has been ongoing since 2022.
“Unfortunately, as we can see, this scenario is entirely possible,” he said. He also denied wanting to “open the way” to the American solution, which, according to media reports, includes heavy concessions for Kyiv, including the recognition as Russian of Crimea, annexed by Moscow in 2014. This possibility is unacceptable to Kyiv and a sticking point for the negotiations initiated by US President Donald Trump.
